Microbe Madness: Health Group seeks end to self medication

In a bid to ensure critical issues around Antimicrobial Resistance, AMR are addressed, an art exhibition dubbed Microbe Madness was organised in Enugu.

The event which was put together by Art for Health Naija in partnership with Center for Memories was targeted at inspiring young minds on the need to use art to combat Antimicrobial Resistance.

Convener of the event, Rose-Camille Aneke emphasized the need for people to adopt preventive measures by engaging in practices such as regular hand washing, avoiding self-medication, adhering to prescribed medications, and getting vaccinated to prevent diseases.

According to Aneke, AMR has the ability to affect anyone at any stage in life, insisting that AMR was fast becoming one of the world’s most urgent public health problems that requires urgent attention.

She says while there is hope to partner with government on the sensitization, the team also intends to take the campaign across the country.

While explaining the reason for choosing arts and drama, the Faculty Member Media-EIS Fellowship Program, Leslie Udoh said using arts exhibition, including microbe related games, paintings and drama became necessary as arts has emerged as a form of expression which helps to immortalise messages, particularly those around health.

A Micro Biologist, Ifenyinwa Onuoma who insisted that self medication remains the root cause of Antimicrobial Resistance, called on people to desist from self medication, always ensure that a laboratory test is conducted anytime they are sick before seeking medication and also endevour to finish their medication as prescribed.
