Senate okays higher institutions for President’s hometown, nine others

The Senate on Wednesday approved the establishment of 10 new higher institutions across the country. The resolution was made after the federal lawmakers adopted the report of the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund. The committee’s chairman, Jibrin Barau, presented the report for consideration. The 10 new higher institutions approved by the Senate include one polytechnic to be located in the hometown of President Muhammadu Buhari, Daura in Katsina State. The federal lawmakers agreed that the establishment of the institutions would open up the education space in the country. They also expressed the belief that the step would assist the country to fight illiteracy. The Senate also said that the approval of the establishment of the institutions was in line with the policy to establish polytechnics across the states. FG approves reduction of NECO Fees, cost of JAMB Forms

The Federal Government has approved a reduction of examination fees charged by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board and the National Examinations Council (NECO). The fees will be reduced from 5,000 to 3,500 with effect from January 2019. Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, made the disclosure after the Federal Executive Council meeting on Wednesday to journalists in Abuja. The Senior Secondary Certificate exam conducted by NECO has also been slashed from N11,350 to N9,850 and fees for the Basic Education Certificate handled by NECO, has been reduced from N5,500 to N4,000. The Head of Digital Communications for President Muhammadu Buhari made the confirmation through his twitter handle.

Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi awards contracts for multiple road projects in Igbo-Eze North, Nkanu-East, Igbo-Etiti LGAs, others

The administration of Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State has awarded contracts for  another set of development projects across the state, totaling over N1 billion, to deepen its noble vision to develop the rural areas in line with the government’s four-point agenda. Briefing newsmen after the meeting of the State Executive Council (EXCO), the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Greg Nnaji, stated that the projects duly considered and approved by the council include the extension of the construction of Ogurute-Mkpamute – Igogoro-Ikpamodo-Okpo-Amaja road and the Ogurute - Umuogbo-Umuokpu-Ette road both in Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area of the state. Engr. Nnaji noted that the present administration had constructed phase one of the two roads, adding that the newly awarded projects were the phase two. Look, even plain old chocolate and vanilla can be made more special with any of these easy and quick homemade topping 1-: PEANUT BUTTER ICE CREAM TOPPING -Place 1/2 sweetened condensed milk and Creamy peanut butter in a small saucepan over low heat. Stir till it is incorporated. Remove from heat then stir in 1 teaspoon vanilla. Transfer sauce to a jar to cool ,it will thicken. To make it easier to pour, heat sauce in the microwave for a few seconds and don't allow to over cool. DSP Ekweremadu, Wife, Son, Escape Assassination Attempt

Reports say the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, his wife, and son have escaped an assassination attempt at at the early hours of this morning. In a statement released by his Special Adviser,  Media,   Uche Anichukwu,  the armed men discreetly evaded the security at Ekweremadu’s Apo Quarters residence, to gain entry into his house. The attackers, who could not immediately shoot in order not to attract the attention of the security personnel on duty, took hold of his son, and commanded him to lead them the Senator’s bedroom. It was at the Senator’s bedroom that a struggle ensued, leading to the arrest of one of the assailants with dangerous weapons and housebreaking devices, while the rest managed to escape.   The arrested member of the gang has, however, refused to divulge any information on the operation and has been handed over to the police. Ekweremadu, his wife, and one of his sons were in the house at the time of the attack.

‘Call Off This Strike’, Education Minister Appeals To ASUU

Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, has appealed to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to call off the ongoing nationwide strike. He made the appeal on behalf of the Federal Government while addressing a news conference on Monday in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory. “As the Minister of Education, I feel your pain; I share your concern and I am willing to go to any mile so that together we can change the narrative of this country for the better,” Adamu said. “I want to use this opportunity to appeal to ASUU to put off this strike in the name of the country, and in view of what the situation is.” The minister stressed that it was important for the leadership of the union to suspend the industrial action for proper negotiation to take place. Labour Calls Off Planned Nationwide Strike

Organised labour has called off its planned nationwide strike. The strike had been scheduled to commence on Tuesday to ensure that the Federal Government meets the demand of workers for a new national minimum wage. However, the National Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Ayuba Wabba, announced the suspension at the end of the meeting of the tripartite committee set up to come up with the new minimum wage late on Monday. According to Wabba, the decision to suspend the strike was taken after agreements were reached and documents signed. The Chairman of the tripartite committee said it would present its report to President Buhari on Tuesday. The committee, however, failed to reach consensus over new minimum wage proposals as the Federal government insisted on N24,000 and Labour N30, 000.
