Enugu Hosts Landmark ECOWAS Trade Workshop to Boost Cross-Border Business Opportunities

The Enugu State Government, through the Enugu SME Center and the Office of Digital Economy, in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (ECOWAS National Unit) and LONES, has announced a one-day workshop on the ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme (ETLS) — a pivotal event aimed at strengthening regional trade and economic integration across West Africa.

Themed “Increasing Intra-Regional Trade through ETLS,” the event is designed to help entrepreneurs, manufacturers, and small businesses in Enugu and beyond tap into the immense opportunities presented by the ECOWAS free trade framework.

According to a statement from the Enugu SME Center, the ETLS program is a key ECOWAS protocol that allows member states to trade goods and produce duty-free, thereby expanding regional cooperation and opening new export markets.

“The ETLS remains one of the most practical avenues for regional growth and wealth creation,” the statement noted. “Through this workshop, Enugu businesses will gain the tools and knowledge to trade freely across ECOWAS member states and strengthen their competitiveness on a continental scale.”

The event will convene policymakers, entrepreneurs, exporters, and economic development experts to discuss strategies for increasing intra-regional trade, reducing non-tariff barriers, and facilitating access to wider markets within the ECOWAS region.

Participants will also explore how the Dr. Peter Mbah-led administration’s focus on innovation, MSME growth, and digital inclusion aligns with ECOWAS’s broader vision of sustainable economic cooperation.

The workshop underscores Enugu’s commitment to transforming itself into a hub for regional commerce and innovation, while empowering local businesses to leverage free trade opportunities across West Africa.
