NiMet workers suspend strike action

Following the intervention by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, Employees of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) have suspended their strike.  A release endorsed by the spokesman of the Minister, Tunde Moshood days the decision was reached after a meeting convened by the Minister with leaders of the aggrieved unions, including the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) and the Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals (ANAP). The release made public that the strike was suspended temporarily until May 13, 2025, pending the outcome of the Minister’s intervention on the issues raised. BREAKING: Air Peace grounds flight operations nationwide

Air Peace Ltd. has announced the suspension of all flight operations nationwide due to the ongoing strike embarked upon by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET). This is contained in a statement signed by the Head of Corporate Communications, Air Peace, Dr Ejike Ndiulo, on Wednesday in Lagos. According to Ndiulo, the decision is necessary because NiMet is the agency responsible for issuing CNH (Current Nowcast of Hazardous Weather) reports, critical for safe landings, especially during this season of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms. He said without these reports from the control tower, flight safety could not be guaranteed. “As a safety-first airline, we have chosen to act responsibly by suspending operations until NiMet resumes full service. “We understand this may cause inconvenience, and we sincerely apologise. Gas Supply to Geometric Power Resumes, as More People Now Receive Electricity

  Gas supply to the 188MW Geometric Power Plant in Aba, Abia State, has resumed three days after it was suspended due to what industry experts call a process upset and a gas leak in the associated gas gathering (AGG) facilities of a leading indigenous oil and gas company in the neighbouring Rivers State. Gas supplies resumed last night, and by 9.02 pm, one of the 47MW turbines had started to generate 25MW, according to a mechanical engineer and power consultant, Dike Ejike, who confirmed the development to newsmen this morning in an interview. “By 11 am hours today, it was generating 37.44MW, and by 2 pm, it had risen to 39.5MW”, said Ejike. “It is increasing gradually”. Gas Pipeline Leaks in Rivers Cause Electricity Shortage in Aba

A gas leak and facility process upset on the Associated Gas Gathering (AGG) facilities around the Rivers State capital axis have caused a considerable electricity shortage in the Aba Ring-fenced Area, comprising nine of the 17 local government areas (LGAs) in Abia State, it has been revealed. According to sources who do not want their names mentioned in the media because they have no authority to speak to the press on the matter, the incidents occurred in the AGGs in Obigbo and Agbada, both on the outskirts of Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital. “The incidents are at Obigbo near Port Harcourt and at Agbada which is between Port Harcourt city and the airport”, stated one of the sources, an engineer with the NNPC Marketing Limited (NGML), who revealed that the process upset at Obigbo was discovered earlier but “it does not seem as serious as that of Agbada”. The Federal Government has on Friday announced the temporary closure of the Akani Ibiam International Airport in Enugu, Enugu State for emergency runway repairs.  This action is as a result of a sudden and significant rupture in the asphalt surface at a critical section of the runway.  In a statement issued by Director, Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, Obiageli Oprah who revealed that the  airport will be shut from April 22nd to May 6th, 2025, said this was in compliance with Nigerian civil aviation regulations.
