South East Govs meet in Enugu... Security issues dominate discussions.
The expanded meeting of the South-East Governors Forum commences at the Government House, Enugu, with Governors Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State, David Umahi of Ebonyi State/Chairman of the Forum, Willie Obiano of Anambra State, Emeka Ihedioha of Imo State and Deputy Governor of Abia State, Rt. Hon. Ude Oko Chukwu, in attendance.
The meeting which has issues of security and closure of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, high on the agenda, also has the following in attendance: The Minister of Aviation, Hon. Hadi Sirika; the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Yusuf Buratai, represented by the GOC, 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, Maj. Gen. Abubakar Maikobi; the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, represented by the Air Officer Commanding Ground Training Command, Enugu, Air Vice Marshal Idi Amin and the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, represented by AIG, Zone 9, Umuahia, Baba Tijani.
Others include, CPs and SDs of DSS of five states of the South East; the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Nnia Nwodo, Prof. Barth Nnaji, leadership of Vigilante/Neighbourhood Watch groups in the zone, representatives of FERMA, Nzuko Umunna, and the Director of Highways, South East zone, Henry Udeh, among others.
Following the security challenges facing the country, the south East governors forum agreed for a joint air operation with security agencies in the fight against bandits in the zone.
The Forum also placed a ban on the movement of herders with AK47 and cutlasses and their movement from one community to another.
Presenting a communique reached at the end of the south East governors forum, the chairman of the forum and the governor of Ebonyi State, Dave Umahi who stressed the need for a security committee to be set up with one representative from each state also exonerated the governors on the allegation of their involvement during the 2017 opeartion python dance in the zone.
On the runway of the Enugu international airport, the chairman of the SEGF hinted that the governors in collaboration with the aviation minister, ministry of works among others are working out a comprehensive palliative measures to ensure safety of the passengers using alternative means of airport.
The forum commended the governor of Enugu state, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi for the employment of forest guards.
Further contributing, the minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika Abubakar appealed to the people of the south East to exercise patient with the repair of work at the runway of the Akanu Ibiam international airport noting that work will be concluded before the end of December.
