Enugu Airport Closure will adversely affect Socio Economy of the South East –Rep. Nnolim Nnaji


The Chairman of House Committee on Aviation Hon. Nnolim Nnaji has expressed concern over the planned closure of Enugu Airport noting that it would have adverse effect on the socio-economy of the South East.

He regretted that the closure was coming at a time travelling by road in south East zone has become a nightmare due to the prevailing security challenges.

He however, stressed that his committee would work assiduously with relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies to ensure that the repair works are completed within the stipulated time. 

Nnolim Nnaji consequently called on the Federal Government to come up with special grants to Enugu State Government to enable it cope with the increased demand for security and maintenance of roads that will serve the diverted Traffic from the Enugu Airport.

Rep Nnaji equally appealed to the Ministry of Works to ensure that the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) is adequately mobilized to carry out some urgent repair works on the various access roads between Enugu and alternate airports that would serve Enugu Traffic during the period.

Honourable Nnolim Nnaji who said he was not happy that the Enugu Airport run-way collapsed within six years of its construction assured that his committee would raise questions on the matter very soon.

 “By my investigation, a standard run- way should have a life span of thirty years so if that runway could collapse under six years some people have to give us explanations.

“The country is going through some difficult times economically and there are so many things contesting for the scarce resources so we cannot afford to have huge tax payers money go down the drains just like that”, he said.

He stated that if in the course of our findings we discover that the contractor did a shoddy job on the collapsed run-way, it will not go scot-free.

Honorable Nnaji who represents Nkanu East/ West in the House of Representatives further assured that his committee would not witch hunt anyone but stressed that it would strive to ensure that the right things are done to keep the nation’s Aviation sector safe and reliable.

He further added that the house was prepared to work closely with the Executive arm of the Government to improve air travel in the country.

EEDC ANNOUNCES GENERAL SYSTEM COLLAPSE

The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company PLC (EEDC) has informed it's esteemed customers of a general system collapse that occurred at 18:48 hours today, 14th October, 2024.  According to a statement issued by EEDC Head, Corporate Communication, Emeka Eze, the collapse has resulted in the loss of supply currently being experienced across EEDC network. Consequently, due to this development, all our according to him "interface TCN stations are out of supply, and we are unable to provide services to our customers in Abia, Anambra,  Ebonyi,  Enugu, and Imo States". Unbearable Cost: Table, sachet water producers shut down production in Enugu

  The Association of Table Water Producers (ATWAP) says it will shut down and suspend production in all water producing factories in Enugu State due to unbearable high cost of production. This is contained in a statement issued by the Chairman of ATWAP,  Enugu State Chapter, Tony Edike and its State Secretary, Sir Clems Nwamadi, on Sunday in Enugu. The statement was issued after members of ATWAP Enugu State Chapter held an emergency meeting in Enugu on Feb.8, 2024, on challenges confronting all members of the association. It said from Monday, Feb. 12 to Thursday, Feb.15, 2024 all Table Water Producers in Enugu State including Sachets and Pet Bottles are required to down tools and suspend all production.
